In a way, Demon’s Souls is the spiritual predecessor of From Software’s Dark Souls, which became a critical and commercial success thanks to its crushing difficulty and challenging bosses. The game puts players in the role of a lone warrior who finds himself in the kingdom of Boletaria that is currently overtaken by a mysterious colorless fog. The player is tasked in defeating demons with the help of the Maiden in Black, and save the kingdom of Boletaria. In addition to giving more souls and increasing enemy damage, a black world tendency also manipulates NPC stats, Black Phantom player stats, and your soul form stats. Priests start with a mace which is good, but what is even better is the Blessed Mace.
The Kris Blade, when equipped, causes you to deal more magic damage. Just use it as an off-hand weapon while you cast magic spells with a catalyst. For starting players, the obvious class to pick first is the Knight or Soldier. They’re simple, dependable classes — most everyone will go with the Knight. One way that Demon’s Souls may actually be easier than Dark Souls is with its healing system.

The Demon’s Souls remake doesn’t add an easy mode or anything like that to make it more accessible to newcomers. It also doesn’t bother to really explain most of its basic gameplay mechanics, leaving it up for players to figure everything out on their own. Experimentation and learning how everything works is part of the fun of a Souls game, but it’s not something that’s going to appeal to everyone. Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake is almost the same exact game that released in 2009 in terms of core gameplay. Movement is a bit more precise and it’s not as rough around the edges, but for the most part, the gameplay is the same.

Bluepoint has done an excellent job of capturing the same moody darkness of Demon’s Souls, and the environments look and feel much like you would hope, giving off the same vibe they did over a decade ago. In 2020, Sony decided to finally make that Demon’s Souls remake, but just to show how they truly held this IP in the palm of their hands, they had BluePoint Games handle this instead of FromSoft. Perhaps there’s a logic to that decision that FromSoft fans can also appreciate, as FromSoft was in deep on several projects already. To expect FromSoft to remake their old games is to relegate them away from making entirely new, original games.
Again you will have a set of stairs to your left, this time with a Boletaria Soldier standing at the top. Don’t go up just yet, stick to the right, smash the barrels to loot an Unknown Warrior Soul. This weapon is similar to the Falchion and well-suited for dexterity builds. Most of how you play the game is dictated by a stamina meter that determines how much you can run, swing your sword, or block incoming blows. In combat, Demon’s Souls is largely about managing your stamina meter and timing, making sure to block certain attacks, dodge others, and strike when you have an opening–without overcommitting and leaving yourself open.
Bluepoint Games imported most of the original combat data but rerecorded the animations and voice lines with a few of the actors returning. You’ll need to complete the Shrine of Storms and acquire the Storm Ruler — but this is the best place to farm souls, and it’s completely trivial to earn as many as you’ll ever need by returning here. Just past the archstone, you’ll encounter special Reaper enemies. Shoot them with arrows to kill them — one Reaper will drop 4,000 souls when defeated. The ghosts them summon will also die, which is why they’re worth so many souls. To really start farming souls, you need to reach 4-2 by defeating the Adjudicator.
The remake of the game now gives players the modern rolling mechanics which help make the game feel less dated. win79 in a dark fantasy world, players take control of a hero who has journeyed to the fictional kingdom of Boletaria, which is being ravaged by a cursed fog that brings forth demons who feast on the souls of mortals. The game was described as a spiritual successor to the King’s Field series of games. That game, remade for the PlayStation 4, takes place in a wide expanse of open wilderness. In the original, this wilderness is beautiful but a little barren. This may seem like a technical limitation, but it gives a powerful impression of the place as untouched but, somehow, already dead. Nothing roams through these lands but you and the colossi you’re going to kill. But the Bluepoint version is absolutely lush, an Eden of overgrowth in every direction. Due to a simple oversight, This would of been earlier but still we are finally there!
For example, the miners in Stonefang Tunnel are weak to piercing weapons like rapiers, and Phalanx is weak to fire (hence why you get so many firebombs in the game’s first level). I recommend carrying a shield at almost all times, in order to defend yourself and parry blows. If you’re playing as Royalty, you’ll start with a catalyst (a magic wand, basically), but if you didn’t and want to cast magic spells like fireballs, you’ll need to buy or find one. For miracles, which includes healing and curing spells, you’ll need a talisman.
